The photo industry is seeing multiple challenges. On the one hand, there are the rising prices of cameras and lenses, and on the other hand, there are fewer jobs available today. However, an example of the former is presented to us yet again, as OM System announces its price hike. The company held out as long as it could in the United States before it had to give in. Here is a look at the prices and what to expect.
First reported by Photo Rumors, there is no detailed list yet, but one can see a sharp hike of 10% to 20% prices on the lenses. Here is an example of it below:

However, there are some new releases, such as the ED 50–200mm f2.8 IS PRO, which have not seen a price increase, per se. But lenses such as the 60mm macro and the 14-150mm have seen a considerable hike. These changes must have been implemented around the same time Canon and Sony announced their second price hike.
Some of the OM System gear is manufactured in Vietnam, which now faces a 20% tariff. However, their website notes that the manufacturing facilities are also in Japan, which faces a 15% reciprocal tariff, and China as well, which is expected to go to triple digits from 30%. According to the BBC, the new 100% tariff is a result of China’s control over its exports of rare earth metals, which President Donald Trump opposes.
We aren’t sure if this is the last hike of the year, considering various factors are in place. As the global situation becomes increasingly precarious, it remains to be seen how it will continue to impact camera prices. President Donald Trump has taken these steps under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. However, the US Supreme Court is still considering the legality of this step, and if the court strikes it down, we may receive some relief.
