The new set of tariffs has caused quite a stir in the photography industry. While reports suggested that the 10% tariffs, a result of a 90-day pause, will change, the new number is not too far off. As we had reported earlier, Japan’s imported goods face a 15% tariff in the United States, a number that has irked many photographers. Could this mean that starting today, August 1, one will have to pay more for getting a brand new lens? Well, the answer will certainly excite you.
According to a report from Photo Rumors, Sigma has confirmed that there will be no increase in the price of the lens. This comes as a huge sigh of relief, considering Sigma has already raised the price by 10%. In other words, lenses such as 300-600mm f4 DG OS Sports, which cost around $6000, will now be available for $6600.
The report notes that the company sent an “internal email” promising not to increase the prices further in the United States. In fact, the company has officially announced the news on its website, stating its decision.
In June, we adjusted our pricing to account for the initial 10% tariff. After careful evaluation, we have decided to absorb the additional 5% increase internally, rather than pass it along to our customers and retail partners.

This is great news since there have been reports that companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm may want to increase their prices a second time around. While there is no official announcement yet, one simply has to wait and see how the situation pans out.
If Sigma, a third-party lens manufacturer, can keep the costs as they are, then camera companies like Canon and others can achieve similar results. Trade wars have always hurt American business, and this time, they are putting pressure on photographers’ earnings. So, those who have been meaning to buy a new camera or lens will have to wait until they get significant rebates. While this may not happen right away, there is a chance of companies announcing a new sale later in the year. In the meantime, it’s best to wait and see how the political and economic turmoil pans out. Perhaps, things will simmer over and there will be no more tariffs in the future. If not, then one may have to look at purchasing cameras from the past five to keep things affordable.
