Compact cameras are back for good, and it seems the trend will not die down any time soon. From Google Trends to various camera sales charts, one can see how smaller sensor cameras are gaining traction, with compacts being just as favoured as any mirrorless device. Today, we look at the latest rankings from camera sales, which showcase the company doing the best in this domain. Perhaps you already know the winner.
According to Digital Camera Info, Yodobashi Camera has revealed the sales charts for the first 15 days of August. While the chart reflects the trends in Japan alone, it is interesting to see some cameras return years later.
From the chart, you can see Canon dominating the sales, with some of its older models like Canon IXY 650 and SX740 HS on the list. The company has three models, followed by Sony and Fujifilm with two models each, and Ricoh, Leica, and OM System with one model each. It is surprising to see Leica on this list because in the other sales chart, they never made it to the list due to their prices. However, this is the only place where the company is selling so well.
In addition, 1-inch or 1/2.3-inch sensor cameras seem to be the most common choice. There are about six of those on the list. Then comes APS-C and Four Thirds, with one offering each, as well as full frame and medium format, with one model each. The list is diverse, and it is not surprising to see bigger sensors be a part of it. That’s because many serious photographers like a compact camera, one that they can easily fit into their pockets, while they are going to travel or on a vacation. For some street photographers, it is quite inconspicuous and easy to blend in with.
With the Ricoh GR IV launching recently, it remains to be seen whether the camera can topple Canon or Sony. If it does, then we certainly need more compact camera launches soon. One that does not cater content creators but to photographers who hope to capture many more memories that they grow to make.
