Third-party lenses rarely get the appreciation that they deserve. While there are plenty of options to choose from today, there are only a handful of manufacturers who actually provide premium third-party lenses to users. One example is Zeiss, whose image quality has repeatedly inspired photographers to get one for their needs. Zeiss 25mm f2 Batis

The 25mm f2 Batis is designed using 10 elements in 8 groups. It features a close-focusing distance of 20cm, autofocus, and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.2. The lens is compact and lightweight, measuring 3.19 x 3.07 inches and weighing 335g. It excels at great color rendition right out of the camera. There is also wear-ther sealing and impressive sharpness. At the same time, bokeh is creamy, giving you photographs that appear dreamy. As we said in our review, “Here is where this lens is the king and end-all-be-all of all other lenses–and it has to do with color rendition. This is the very first time that anything and everything that I saw come from the Sony cameras needed little to no color work. This is especially true with the new Sony A7r Mk II.”

Zeiss 35mm f2 Loxia

Another exciting full-frame lens, the Zeiss 35mm is perfect for street photography and environmental portraits. It is designed with 9 elements in 8 groups, has a close focusing distance of 30cm, and a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:5.8. However, it lacks autofocus, which can be an issue for some users. The lens, however, is pretty excellent. It offers exceptional sharpness, has solid color rendition, and the ergonomic feel is just right. The size is great, and the manual focusing control is also exceptional.

Zeiss 50mm f1.4 Milvus

Zeiss Milvus offers fully manual lenses that are weather-sealed. The 50mm f1.4 is for portraits and features a 46° angle of view. It also has a close-focusing distance of 1.48 inches, a reproduction ratio of 1:6.7, and a weight of 922g. In our review, we found the lens to be the best 50mm we have ever tested. That’s because it offers great sharpness, beautiful bokeh and skin tones, and offers great colors right out of the camera. It is also built really well and feels great in your hands.

Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Otus

Another excellent portrait offering from the company is the 85mm f1.4 Otus. Due to its performance, the Otus series is considered the crème de la crème of Zeiss lenses. It features 11 elements in 9 groups, a close focusing distance of 0.8m, and a huge 86mm filter thread. In our tests, we found the lens to be exceptionally sharp, more than any other offering in this focal range. It is also well built, has weather resistance, and produces spectacular colors. As we said in our review, “It’s gorgeous. No, really–it’s very creamy when shooting wide open and when combined with proper composition technique to really emphasize it. In addition to that, Zeiss adds micro-contrast to their lenses that makes in-focus areas pop out a bit more.”
