The L-mount alliance finally unveils a new member to its growing organization: Sirui, one of the leading brands that creates lenses, lighting equipment, and tripods. This move will certainly have its perks, especially since L-mount caters to photographers and filmmakers. So far, the brands that have been a part of the alliance include founding members Leica Camera AG, Sigma, and Panasonic, as well as later additions such as Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, DJI, Astrodesign, Samyang, and more recently, Blackmagic Design. Here is a look at what the collaboration could mean.
The L-mount was revealed in 2018 at Photokina, and since then, Leica’s aim has been to create a bayonet mount that will meet the demands of most photographers. From then on, the alliance grew, with lens makers such as Samyang and Sigma, giving L-mount users a chance to choose between a diverse range of lenses. As cameras and lens portfolios increase, photographers have a great opportunity to choose between various lenses without the need to rely on adapters or face functional limitations.
“By welcoming Sirui as a new member, we are not only expanding our network with another strong partner but also reinforcing our commitment to diversity and fresh impulses within the ecosystem,” says Valentino Di Leonardo, Managing Expert Technology & Licensing at Leica Camera AG. “Sirui brings new perspectives and expertise to the Alliance, enriching the L-Mount system with forward-thinking approaches. Together, we aim to provide photographers and filmmakers with an even more comprehensive and flexible system that meets the highest standards,” he added.
Li Jie, Founder and CEO of Sirui Optical, also added that the company hopes to “significantly enhance” the L-Mount Alliance lens ecosystem by “leveraging” its “independent technological innovations, vertically integrated supply chain, and cost advantages.” In other words, Sirui will help add more lenses for both Leica and Panasonic L-mount cameras.
However, the way the L-mount alliance is headed, it is pretty evident that the brand is no longer only going to focus on photography alone. With the inclusion of Blackmagic, Astrodesign, and now Sirui, the company will also gradually target filmmakers and videographers. Sirui, which was founded in 2001, is better known for its anamorphic lenses for cinema use, but they also cater to full-frame and APS-C autofocus lenses for photography, as well as for mobile photography.
In addition to this, the L-mount alliance is growing to become a power source that can easily compete with Sony. Their latest camera, the Leica SL3, proved how it is designed for photographers as much as video creators. “they improved the grip, gave it an incredible imaging sensor that rivals the Sony a7r V, majorly improved the autofocus, and built in some of the best battery life I’ve ever experienced. It’s hard to say no to the Leica SL3,” we said in our review. Similarly, the Panasonic S1R II has a camera that hits every spot correctly, further proving how these devices are only going to get better with time.
This also means we will have more exciting lenses from Sirui, both for video and photography and perhaps more cameras from DJI. An L-mount drone would be perfect, as it will not only be cost-effective but also offer the best. L-mount is seriously on the right track, with Sony and other brands needing to set up their game to win.
