Leica has been having an exceptional year. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leica I, the company has introduced exciting models for its users. So far, we have four new special edition cameras, a book, an event, and even a new grip. As one says, don’t stop the fun. Adding to this vast list of exciting new models is a new special edition of the Leica SL3s. And no, it is not just one camera, but four different sets! Let’s have a look.
Leica has announced a new set of SL Kits featuring the new model and different lenses. The SL3s is a full-frame mirrorless camera with a 24 MP BSI sensor, a new high-speed AF system, and 6K video recording along with 3:2 open-gate recording. However, the standout point is not just the features but also the inclusion of Content Credentials, which make it easy to build a library of images based on transparency and trust. This also makes it easy to verify the metadata, a crucial step in understanding the authenticity of the images for photojournalists and documentary photographers. So, a new kit, thus, can be really beneficial for users with different needs. Here is what Leica is now offering:
- SL3-S Vario Kit 28–70 with Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70mm f/2.8 ASPH. — $6,495.00
(Available since June 12, 2025) - SL3-S Vario Kit 24–70 with Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 ASPH. — $7,995.00
(New) - SL3-S Vario Kit 24–70 + 70–200 with both Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70mm and 70–200mm f/2.8 ASPH. lenses — $10,995.00
(New) - SL3-S Prime Kit 35 with Summicron-SL 35mm f/2 ASPH. — $7,395.00
(New) - SL3-S Prime Kit 50 with Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH. — $7,195.00
(New)
As you can see, each kit is designed for photographers’ different needs. The 50mm and 35mm kits are ideal for those working with street photography or architecture, while the dual lens kit can be used by wedding photographers or those in sports and wildlife. In a way, the five different lenses are perfect for anyone who has been working with a specific genre.
Although we do believe a kit like this could work better with flagship cameras than their updates. The SL3s have a long list of updates, which makes the device ideal for photojournalists and war photographers, who work in a rough environment and need to protect their work. Even in our review, we mentioned how a few updates, like in-camera crop or multiple exposure, would have made sense. “This camera is really designed for photojournalism and therefore getting the images out as fast as possible,” we said in our review. “I wish that the ISO performance above 6400 was better for starters. But adding in something like pre-shooting to ensure that I don’t miss the shot while giving me RAW files is pretty important for professional photojournalists.”
Other than that, we aren’t sure who else will pay close to $6,500, especially when you have various other cameras from brands like Sony and Nikon that can do the same at a much lower price. If you are someone who is keen on Content Credentials to protect your work, only then does this kit make sense. Otherwise, many would simply look at other options, especially since cameras have become quite expensive in recent years.
