At the beginning of this year, Canon revived the PowerShot series, which they had last updated in 2023 with a monocular-style camera, the PowerShot Zoom. The Canon PowerShot V1 did get a positive response, and it now appears, the company is reportedly planning to launch another camera in the PowerShot series, which will excite photographers.

According to Canon Rumors, the company is working on a new camera, which will be in the PowerShot G portfolio. The last G series cameras included the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III and the Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II. So far, the report suggests that the new camera will borrow from these compact cameras, and will include things such as EVF, built-in flash, a more versatile zoom lens, and enhanced optics. Some of these features were actually missing in V1, such as flash and EVF. As a result, by adding such things, Canon aims to re-shift its focus on still photographers, who seem to feel neglected.
The G series was often considered to be the flagship of Canon’s cameras. But in this economy and image-making situation, things might change.
Seeing the trend, it is possible for the new G series camera to hold the same 1.4-inch sensor, but it will be more tuned into the needs of photographers. However, what must be remembered is that Canon needs to make its portfolio stronger, and it faces competition from Fujifilm, which has been ruling the compact camera domain. How they will achieve this depends on the technology, pricing, and the market they are going after. If there is a crossover between the markets, then Fujifilm is likely to take a sizeable chunk, thanks to their popularity.
Either way, with new compact cameras, Canon has the chance to rival smartphone market, since many photographers are tired of using the former. If the Canon PowerShot G has some great features, they will have a winner on heir hands.
