This year, Nikon has launched three products so far—Nikon Z5 II, CoolPix P1100, and the 35mm f1.2 S— each targeting a different audience and their needs. Although Nikon stated they will take 2025 a bit slowly, a new patent suggests otherwise. The company has some excellent lenses in its lineup, and it seems it aims to launch a few more of a similar focal length soon. Per the patent, Nikon is researching another Nikon 35mm f1.2. Here is a look at what it entails.
On April 7, Nikon published a new patent, which showcases a few designs for lenses such as 35mm f1.2 S and a few more examples, which are 24mm f1.2 and 28mm f1.2 lenses. Patent number P2025052870 was originally filed on September 16, 2023, and it suggests that the newer lenses are designed to meet the needs of users who want a “large aperture.” In addition, the lenses will also be best for manual focus and also aim to offer better aberration corrections. Another 35mm lens from Nikon does not really make sense, especially if it’s from the ‘S’ lineup. The reason is that Nikon already has a new 35mm f1.2 Z S, as well as a 35mm f1.4 Z for users. So, why should the company launch another such version? Unless they release one in their normal lens range instead of the S series.
On the other hand, it would make much more sense if Nikon released a 24mm f1.2 and 28mm f1.2 since both lenses have either an f2.8 or f.18 variant. For instance, in our review of the 28mm f2.8, we adored the colors and image quality but were frustrated with autofocus. Another f1.2 variant could come with better advancements, including a faster autofocus. Similarly, with the 24mm f1.8, we noticed the distortion was strong, and the focusing distance was not too close either.
In addition, Nikon’s choice to have brighter aperture lenses is a boon, especially since a lot of photographers need that extra width to shoot in low light. Besides that, the softness of the bokeh can be used for various purposes, especially handy for those who shoot across genres. A lens with f1.2 is not only perfect for photographers but also hybrid users who need that high performance, along with shallow depth of field for their work.
We also must bear in mind that not all patents end up becoming final products that hit the shelf. These are created only for research purposes and may never see the light of day. Until then, keep an eye for Nikon products here.
